As of today, there are only 2 months left until I leave for Guatemala! So far, I’ve raised about $550, and I’m running a bottle drive in my neighbourhood next week. It’s a great start, and I’m excited about the progress I’ve made so far!
I think yesterday was the first time it really hit me – I’m going. SOON. And with that realization comes a mixed-bag of emotions.
First of all – Excitement. I guess you could say I’m addicted to travel. Having done it once makes me want to take off again after having been home for anything longer than a couple of weeks. I’m definitely ready to hit the road again – to learn about a new culture, it’s people, their way of life and the community’s struggles. While I hope to make an impact there, I know that what they give me in return will be much more than I could ever hope to give them. I know that this will be a life-changing trip, and I can’t wait to get it started!
Secondly – Fear. While I’ve traveled before, I haven’t ever traveled to a developing country. As someone who cries during movies that depict real-life poverty, I’m afraid of what I will see there, and how I will be able to cope with it. I’m not worried about living in “worse” conditions than at home, but I am afraid of feeling sad and powerless. I’m glad that I am visiting a developing country as a volunteer, so that I will know I am at least doing SOMETHING to give back and help the community so graciously accepting me.
Thirdly – Panic. This one has nothing to do with the volunteer trip itself – moreso with what I have to do before I leave! I still have 3 weeks to go until I write the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test), so I’ll be in lockdown. Once that’s over and I can finally come up to breathe, I’ll have many medical school applications to finish before I depart. It’s a daunting task, but I know I can do it!
I want to say a big THANK YOU to all of those who have donated and/or shared my page so far! I know I’m still a long way from my goal, but I’m thrilled that I’ve raised anything at all. It’s all because of YOU, so THANK YOU!!
Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Please continue to share my page with everyone you know, so that I can make it to my goal in these next two months! – http://www.youcaring.com/fundraiser_details?fundraiser_id=4829&url=zoevolunteersinguatemala
